Dysphagia is the medical term for any difficulty, discomfort or pain when swallowing.
Dysphagia occurs when there’s a problem with any part of the swallowing process in which food and liquid move from the mouth, through the throat, into the oesophagus, and finally, into the stomach. Swallowing is a complex process, with many muscles and nerves working to move food from the mouth to the stomach.
Some people with dysphagia may experience a slight discomfort while others experience a complete inability to swallow.
Dysphagia has many causes. Any condition that weakens or damages the muscles and nerves used for swallowing may cause dysphagia.
